On January 8, 2026, the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) at Makerere University hosted a landmark academic event: the PhD defense of Mr. Jude Zziwa Byansi. His dissertation, Framework for Enhanced Operation and Maintenance of Sanitation Facilities in Kampala Schools, represents a significant contribution to the intersection of engineering, public health, and sustainable development.

The Candidate’s Contribution
Mr. Byansi’s research addresses one of Kampala’s pressing challenges ensuring that sanitation facilities in schools are not only constructed but also effectively operated and maintained. His framework integrates engineering principles, environmental management strategies, and community participation models to promote sustainability. The study emphasizes the importance of maintenance culture, stakeholder involvement, and innovative monitoring systems to safeguard public health and improve learning environments.
Supervisory Guidance

The candidate’s academic journey was guided by a distinguished supervisory team:
- Dr. Robinnah Nakawunde Kulabako, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Makerere University
- Dr. Swaib Semitiga, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Makerere University
- Professor Frank Kansiime, Department of Environmental Management, Makerere University
Their mentorship ensured that the research was rigorous, interdisciplinary, and aligned with Uganda’s broader development goals.
The Defense Proceedings

The defense was intellectually stimulating, with Dr. Richard Mugambe, Senior Lecturer at the School of Public Health, Makerere University, serving as the official opponent. His critical engagement with the thesis highlighted its strengths while probing areas for further refinement, ensuring the candidate demonstrated mastery of his subject.
The defense panel comprised eminent scholars:

- Associate Professor Dorothy Okello – Dean, School of Engineering, Makerere University
- Dr. Anne Nakagiri – Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Kyambogo University
- Dr. Jotham Sempewo – Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Makerere University
- Dr. Musa Manga – Department of Construction Economics and Management, Makerere University
- Dr. John Bosco Isunju – School of Public Health, Makerere University
- Dr. Kenan Okutut – Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Kyambogo University
Their collective expertise ensured a comprehensive evaluation of the thesis, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of sanitation management.

Academic and Societal Impact
The successful defense of Mr. Byansi’s thesis marks a step forward in Uganda’s efforts to improve school sanitation. His framework offers practical solutions for policymakers, engineers, and school administrators, with potential to influence national sanitation strategies. Beyond academia, the research contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
