Biography

Stephen Mubiita is a Ugandan artist and Lecturer in the Department of Fine Art at the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts (MTSIFA), College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), Makerere University. His teaching and research focus on studio practice, visual communication, and contemporary African art.

As a practicing artist, Mubiita has exhibited internationally, including at the Africa Now – Contemporary Art from Africa exhibition at Tampere Art Museum in Finland and at Rundetaarn in Denmark. His work engages themes of cultural identity, resilience, and the evolving role of African art in global contexts.

In his academic role, he emphasizes experiential learning and mentorship, guiding students to develop strong artistic voices while situating their practice within broader cultural and social discourses. Through both teaching and creative practice, Mubiita contributes to Makerere University’s mission of advancing artistic innovation and cultural visibility.
