Biography

John Bosco Kanuge, widely known as J.B. Kanuge, is a Ugandan painter, printmaker, and academic whose work has significantly shaped the country’s contemporary art scene. Born in 1968, he studied at the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts, Makerere University, where he later became a lecturer. Kanuge’s artistic practice blends traditional Ugandan motifs with modern techniques, producing works that explore themes of community, identity, and social transformation. His pieces, such as The Harvest and Curiosity, have been exhibited both locally and internationally, earning recognition for their cultural depth and technical mastery. Beyond his studio practice, Kanuge has mentored generations of artists, emphasizing the role of art in education and national development. Through exhibitions, teaching, and research, he continues to advance Ugandan art, positioning it within global conversations while preserving its unique cultural heritage.
