Biography

Dr. Sarah Nakisanze is a Ugandan fashion designer, researcher, and educator whose work bridges traditional craft and contemporary design. She holds a PhD in Social Sustainability, with research focusing on indigenous materials, handcraft fashion, and cultural identity. At Makerere University’s Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts, she lectures in fashion and material culture, mentoring students while advancing sustainable design practices. Her research interests include eco‑product design using barkcloth, sustainable handicraft production, and North–South trade relations in creative industries. Beyond academia, she is the founder of Easy Afric Designs (2004), a creative enterprise that reimagines barkcloth for modern fashion and global markets. Through teaching, enterprise, and community engagement, Dr. Nakisanze empowers artisans, promotes fair trade, and positions Ugandan fashion within international sustainability conversations. Her innovative approach preserves cultural heritage while strengthening Uganda’s creative economy and institutional visibility.
