On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, a PhD viva voce examination was held at the Makerere Art Gallery for PhD candidate Annette NakimbugweSebba, who had successfully satisfied both her internal and external examiners. The viva provided an opportunity for the examination panel to assess and interrogate her work, seeking a deeper understanding of her research and its contributions.

While introducing the candidate, the Acting Dean of the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Art (MTSIFA), Prof. Stephen Mukiibi, described Annette as a Ugandan artist and a lecturer in the Department of Visual Communication and Multimedia Design at MTSIFA. He said her PhD thesis, titled “Framing Mwanamugimu: Exploring Mothering and Imagery Universality in PublicHealth Communication Strategies,” examines the role of maternal imagery in public health communication and its broader significance.
The opponent for the viva was Dr. Maureen Muwanga Ssenoga from Kyambogo University. The panel included Prof. Kizito Maria Kasule (Makerere University), Dr. Juliet NsiimaKategaya (Department of Visual Communication Design, MTSIFA), Dr. Segantebuka (School of Education), and Dr. Robert Sewanyana, a specialist in applied sculpture, art for social development, and public health.
During her presentation, Annette noted that this was the third and final examination of her PhD journey. She presented the background, purpose, objectives, methodology, findings, and analysis of her research before responding to questions from the panel.
