CEDAT Develops a Neural Text-To-Speech System

A multidisciplinary research team led by Dr. Ronald Kizito developed a novel Artificial Intelligence software application that teaches a computer how to read Luganda text out loud. This application can be of great help in disseminating health messages to the public as part of the goal of the Ministry of Health of promoting public health and preventing disease.A large percentage of the 17 million people who understand Luganda cannot read it because of factors like poor health, illiteracy, or visual impairment.  The Neural Text-To-Speech System, an innovation to aid the translation of written Luganda language text into speech using Artificial intelligence is a result of the research, ‘A Luganda Neural Text-To-Speech System for Health Promotion and Accessibility for Health Promotion and Accessibility’. This is a multi-year task involving researchers from CEDAT and the Languages and Literature Departments in CHUSS.
