Course Description

The course aims at developing individual choices and expression in the field of textile design. Students develop a self-directed, mature and cohesive body of studio work with the support of the academic advisor(s). Most emphasis is placed on experimental approaches to textile design with a focus on generating various mark-making techniques using different media and surfaces; the course promotes research and inquiry into textile and surface design materials, processes, and technologies. This is largely a self-directed study that results into an execution of a body of work both for apparel and upholstery fabric design.

Course Objectives:

The course is designed to:

  • Prepare a student for an independent career in textile and surface design and production.
  • Engage learners in an independent visual enquiry into the resources available for textile design, and carry out practical studies geared at solving technical problems associated with textile design and surface decoration.
  • Equip learners with the visual tools necessary for artistic self- expression using the medium of textiles and non-woven fabrics.
