Course description:

The course focuses on the physical, social, economic and policy aspects of natural and human-made disasters. Particular attention will be given to basic issues of land use and development, institutional policies and response, and the political economy of disasters. The course examines the causes and consequences of disasters and analyzes the factors affecting recovery and resilience.

 

Objectives:

  • To introduce the various theories, policies and approaches to disaster planning and management
  • To give students an overview of the science of hazards, including hazard types, the impacts of hazards, observing, monitoring and forecasting hazard events, mitigation and response, risk and vulnerability assessment.
