CEDAT Students Win Best Young Author Award at Africa Electricity Symposium 2025

Two students from the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), Makerere University, have been awarded the prestigious Best Young Author Award at the 2025 Africa Electricity Symposium, held at Méstil Hotel & Residences in Kampala.

Reagan KyomuhendoMuhimbo and Shem Christopher Luwandaga received the honor for their research paper titled “Understanding the Underutilization of Electric Pressure Cookers in Urban Uganda: Barriers, Motivators, and Policy Recommendations.” Their work was presented under the symposium’s sub-theme on decentralized and off-grid energy solutions.

Our former student Shem and current research assistant on an ongoing project won best young author award

Organized by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), the Africa Electricity Symposium is a premier continental platform that brings together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and energy enthusiasts to explore innovations in sustainable energy. This year’s theme, “Powering Africa: Smart, Innovation, and Energy Sustainability for Growth,” set the stage for dynamic discussions and groundbreaking research presentations.

The winning paper by Muhimbo and Luwandaga explores the socio-economic and behavioral factors limiting the adoption of electric pressure cookers in urban households, despite their potential to reduce energy costs and improve cooking efficiency. Their findings offer actionable policy recommendations aimed at accelerating clean cooking transitions in Uganda.

The award highlights CEDAT’s growing influence in energy research and innovation, and underscores the importance of youth-led contributions to Africa’s energy future.
