Eng. Dr. Seith Mugume, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), has been appointed as a Lead Author of Chapter 1, Working Group 1, for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). Dr. Mugume will contribute to Framing, Methods, and Knowledge Sources under Working Group I: The Physical Science Basis.
His selection places him among a distinguished group of 664 experts from 111 countries, chosen to serve as Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors. These appointments were made through a competitive global nomination process involving 3,771 candidates, demonstrating the IPCC’s commitment to scientific excellence and diversity, according to a press statement from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Press Office.
The IPCC, established in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is the UN’s principal body for assessing climate science. Its periodic reports provide the foundation for global climate policy, adaptation strategies, and mitigation efforts.
The Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) will inform international policies and guidelines on climate change, offering a comprehensive scientific basis for decision-making in an increasingly uncertain future. According to the statement, work on the report begins later this year, with the first Lead Author meeting scheduled for December 2025, and the full assessment cycle expected to conclude in 2029.
