Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Art (MTSIFA)

Department of Industrial Art and Applied Design

The Department of Industrial Arts and Applied Design (DIAAD) was preceded by the Department of Industrial Arts and Design (DIAD). Created in 1995, DIAD had a mandate of training graduates who are responsive to community challenges and needs.

Established in 2010, the Department of Industrial Arts and Applied Design has inherited and widened this mandate. It has experienced and dedicated lecturers specialising in the theory and practice of ceramics, jewellery, fashion, metal and wood fabrication, textiles and weaving. It has improved the curriculum offered under the Bachelor of Industrial and Fine Art degree programme. It is also in the process of launching a Bachelor of Industrial Arts and Applied Design (BIAAD) degree programme. Enriched by the

inclusion of computer aided design, technical drawing, communication skills, governance, gender studies, entrepreneurship and business practice in the curriculum, this new programme will motivate talented students to excel.
