Welcome to the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Art (MTSIFA). This is the oldest and most celebrated Art School in East Africa. Founded in 1937 by Mrs. Margaret Trowell, after whom it is named, MTSIFA has three departments: Fine Art (DFA); Industrial Arts and Applied Design(DIAAD); and Visual Communication Design and Multimedia(DVCDM). It is a close-knit community of faculty, students, and professionals that serves largely as an arts conservatory and center of excellence in the arts for the East African region.
MTSIFA currently offers programs in fine art and industrial design at Bachelors, Masters and PhD level. Below is a list of undergraduate programs offered under MTSIFA.
The curriculum challenges students to explore critical aesthetic and community issues, and necessitates them to come up with individual art and design solutions. Through courses in business administration, finance and banking, and arts marketing, MTSIFA students learn to combine professional studio-practice with the entrepreneurial skills needed to build a successful career in the vibrant cultural sector while others use their creativity and business background to make a real contribution in the public sector, in their communities, and in their lives.
