Makerere University’s 62nd graduation ceremony had a unique beginning with an opening prayer from the former Minister of Ethics, Miria Matembe, followed by opening remarks from the Vice Chancellor an Chancellor.

In his opening remarks, the University Chancellor, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera congratulated the Staff and Students of the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, stating that their brilliant efforts in coming up with the Kiira Electric Vehicle are starting to receive the backing they deserve.

In his speech, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Venansius Baryamureeba praised theCollege of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology. He said “The students and lectures of the College have been involved in research which has greatly contributed to the promotion of the University’s mission-To provide world class innovative teaching, learning, research and services responsive to national and global needs.” Prof. Baryamureeba continued to thank the Government of Uganda  for earmarking Shs25 billion to support research and innovation in the College under the “Presidential Initiative’’ over a period of five (5) years. The projects supported include the Vehicle Design Project, the MakaPads project, the Low cost irrigation project, the ILabs Project, among others.

“The Year 2011 has been a prosperous one here at Makerere University. As we celebrate this academic achievement, it is my singular honour as the 14th Vice Chancellor of Makerere University to highlight some significant institutional achievements in teaching and learning, research and innovations, knowledge transfer partnerships and networking.”

As part of the 62nd Graduation Ceremony, on Tuesday 24th January 2012,  H.E President Mwai Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya will be conferred upon the Honorary Doctorate of Laws of Makerere University, in recognition of his distinguished and outstanding contribution to public service at the national, regional and international levels.

A total of 11,191 candidates are graduating with degrees and diplomas of which 5,253 (47%) are female and 5,938, (53%) are male. The graduation ceremony is scheduled to run from Monday the 16th of January through Friday the 20th of January 2012. From the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, 551 students graduated, with 142 (26%) female candidates and 409 (74%) male candidates. For more details about the candidates from CEDAT, please visit the statistics page.
