Makerere Art Gallery/Institute of Heritage Conservation and Restoration on Thursday, 13 October, 2011 was privileged to have the new Swedish Ambassador Urban Anderson open an exhibition APPLIED THEORIES OF EXPANDING MINDS, a video installation by visiting Swedish students Rut Karin Zettergren, Lena Bergendahl and Jennifer Rainsford. The exhibitors are former students of the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts.

The Ambassador emphasised his country’s commitment to support education especially research. The government of Sweden,
under SIDA is sponsoring PhD research at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology. The film “Applied Theories of Expanding Minds” was shot in Kenya in 2009. Our gallery was honoured to be the first venue in East Africa to display the video.

About the video

In Kenya a fanatic group of individuals has started a new tribe. Their mission is to create an alternative to the existing
society by letting the earth’s magnetic fields run their lives. The film follows their rituals and ceremonies in a society which was controlled by China for a long time. It is a video that we could call abstract. This innovative multimedia exhibition Was the first of its kind this academic year, and we hope it will motivate the student audience to expand their creativity beyond the conventional methodologies.
