The Renewable Energy Incubator at Makerere University is a partner to Fredskorpset (FK) Norway, a Norwegian Government body supporting professional exchange between institutions in Norway and Africa, Asia and Latin America. The south-south exchange programme involves 3 partners (Husk Power Systems, India, Renewable Energy Incubator, MUK and Space Engineering Limited, Tanzania). The exchange period is 13 months; 10.5 months in host country (India), 2 weeks in Bangkok (Preparatory course and home coming) and 2 months in home country (Uganda). The exchange programme aims to strengthen the capacity needed for sustainable business development in rural biomass gasification systems in Uganda and Tanzania.

Sustainable Renewable Energy Businesses in Uganda

In Uganda, the exchange programme is implemented by “Sustainable Renewable Energy Businesses in Uganda Project”. This project started in October 2011; it is hosted by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT). The project’s objective is “to support the development of local renewable energy companies which utilize renewable energy in a sustainable and financially beneficial manner”.

The project is currently recruiting a 3rd round participant to travel and work in India starting October 2014. The contract will be 13 months with one month’s home visit in the middle of the exchange period.

The participant will be involved in Research and Development to develop HPS gasifier technology designs that are more appropriate for the East African context. In addition, there will be development of a training manual customized to suit the East African context.

Qualification: Bachelor´s or MSc Degree in Engineering, renewable energy or its equivalent. Relevant experience or research in biomass gasification will be an added advantage.
