The outgoing Principal, Dr Barnabas Nawangwe has today 05/08/2013 handed over office to the Deputy Principal Dr Henry Alinaitwe. The handover was witnessed by the Deans, Head of Departments, representatives of administrative, technical and support staff. Dr Alinaitwe will be acting principal until a substantive principal is elected. Dr Nawangwe moves to the office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration.

The out-going Principal thanked the staff of the college for the support given to him during his tenure.“I have had the privilege to preside over a vibrant organisation, with a focused and dedicated team of staff members, teaching and non-teaching as well as an inquisitive student population. To them I am immensely grateful,” he said.

“I leave CEDAT a vibrant college, full of hope and determination, eager to explore further and confidently looking beyond the horizons. I leave a contented man, happy to handover to a team of visionary and dedicated servants of our great university. I have no single thread of doubt that CEDAT will grow from strength to strength.”

On receiving the instruments of power, which included a handover report, keys to the office of the principal, payment token  and car keys among other things.On his part, Dr Alinaitwe congratulated Dr Nawangwe upon being appointed DVC (F&A). He thanked him for the many years of service to the Former faculty of Technology and CEDAT.

He described Dr Nawangwe as transparent, accountable, cheerful, sober, one with an open door policy, a good communicator and listener as well as one that is bold and assertive. “Dr Nawangwe has served CEAT in an exemplary manner. That may partly explain why CEDAT is more stable compared to many other colleges. He should continue to enhance the positive attributes and discard that may be retrogressive,” Dr Alinaitwe said.

He requested Dr Nawangwe to continue to guide CEDAT leaders, looby for the college and be a good ambassador. Dr Nawangwe was appointed Ag. Principal of CEDAT on January 14, 2011.Prior to this, he was the Dean of the Faculty of technology since 2003 to 2011.

He spearheaded the commencement of the architecture course at Makerere University and obtained its International Accreditation. He initiated 10 new programmes at graduate and undergraduate Levels, Increased Enrolment from 800 to more than 3000 In 5 years transformed former faculty of technology from research-less to leading research unit at Makerere. He oversaw Development of the Kiira Ev, Africa’s First Electric Car, initiated The Innovations System And Clusters Programme, Oversaw Development Of The Makapads, Enhanced Private Sector And Government Partnerships (MoUs with UPDF, MIN. OF DEFENCE, MTIC, PSFU, UIRI, WDD, MIN. OF ENERGY, SNV).

He has Modernised Research Infrastructure at the college, leaving behind well-equipped laboratories (Env. Eng. Lab, Renewable Energy – Model For Africa, Gis Lab, Telecom Lab, Structures, Materials Lab, Computer Labs, Etc.)

He increased female staff from 5 to more than 30, Chaired committee to streamline mature age entry, Chaired the university research, administrative and financial reforms (URAFR) committee, including college formation. Dr Nawangwe will be dearly missed by the CEDAT family but we wish him God’s blessing and guidance in his new position.
