Reconfiguring Acholi Cultural Dance: A Visual Arts Mediation of Bwola Dance in a Performative Space of Kampala City

Stephen Gwoktcho is an assistant lecturer in the department of Visual Communication Design and Multimedia (VCDM) in Margaret Trowel School of Industrial and Fine Arts (MTSIFA) in the College of Engineering Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT). He specializes in the Drawing of human anatomy and portrait art. The bulk of his workload is in the Department of Fine Art (DFA) where he lectures Advanced Drawing Elective in year three and Intermediate Drawing Elective in year two.

He is a second year PhD. Student researching on Reconfiguring Acholi Cultural Dance: A Visual Arts Mediation of Bwola Dance in a Performative Space of Kampala City. His is funded by Andrew W. Mellon. His research interest is to interrogate the social dynamics of the city of Kampala using cultural dance mediated by visual arts. He examines the lived experiences of many Ugandans in the urban geography by associating Bwola dance with the informal sector innovation and hassles of the city. His first publication on 21st of October, 2022 coincided with the Makerere @100 celebrations. The event included short plays by the Students of Literature from College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS), Poetry by renown poets from Makerere University and outside. The event was crowned by Bwola dance performed by Watmon Dance Group one of the research respondents.
