Biography

Amanda Ngabirano is a Ugandan urban planner and academic, serving as a Lecturer in Urban Planning at Makerere University’s College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT). She teaches and researches in the Department of Architecture and Physical Planning, with a strong focus on sustainable urban development and mobility.

Ngabirano is widely recognized for her advocacy of bicycle transport in Ugandan cities, promoting cycling as a means to reduce congestion, noise, and air pollution, while fostering greener and more inclusive urban spaces. Her vision emphasizes spatial order, all‑inclusive mobility, and social justice in urban development.

Beyond academia, she has played a national role as Chairperson of the National Physical Planning Board (NPPB), Uganda’s apex body for physical planning. Her academic journey includes studies at Makerere University, the University of Greenwich, and Saxion University of Applied Sciences, positioning her as a leading voice in sustainable mobility and participatory planning.
