Biography

Dr Angelo Kakande (Associate Professor, Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts, Makerere University, Uganda) is visiting the School of Art History in September 2023 as part of his 2023-2024 Global Fellowship at the University of St Andrews. Dr Kakande is an artist, art historian and lawyer, and an expert in histories of modern and contemporary art in East Africa. His artworks and publications have particularly engaged with the ways in which art functions in defense of individual and collective rights.

He obtained degrees in law and fine art from the Makerere University in Uganda and he studied for his doctorate in the history of art at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He is a Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies and a Fellow of the Carnegie Next Generation of African Academics. He has received awards from Carnegie Corporation of New York, Makerere University and Wits University.

Residing in a country (and continent) whose present and future are interrupted by ruthless politicians and dictatorial regimes, Kakande interrogates ways in which art functions in the defence of individual and collective rights. He has exhibited artworks and published articles in this area. He is currently completing his post-doctoral research on art, human rights and development in Uganda.
