Research Interests:
Angella Babirye Birabwa is a Ugandan textile artist and academic affiliated with Makerere University’s Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts (MTSIFA), College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT). She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Decorative Textiles from Makerere University (2008–2011) and earlier training in Apparel and Textiles from Uganda Martyrs Secondary School, Namugongo.
Her artistic practice focuses on decorative textiles and design innovation, exploring how fabric and surface design can serve as both aesthetic expression and cultural storytelling. She integrates traditional Ugandan textile techniques with contemporary approaches, producing work that highlights identity, heritage, and sustainability.
As an educator and designer, Babirye emphasizes applied creativity and material exploration, encouraging students to engage textiles as a medium for both artistic innovation and practical design solutions. Her contributions strengthen Makerere University’s mission of advancing art and design education in Uganda.
