Biography

Edward Balaba is a ceramic artist and Lecturer at the Department of Fine Art, Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts (MTSIFA), College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), Makerere University. An alumnus of Makerere University, he has been a practicing artist for more than a decade and a teacher for over 17 years.

His artistic practice is deeply inspired by the materiality of everyday life and the ways communities construct meaning through objects. He works primarily with ceramics, employing experimental hand-building techniques that combine slab, coil, throwing, sculpting, and fabrication methods. This approach allows him to create innovative forms that merge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.

Balaba’s teaching emphasizes both technical mastery and creative exploration, mentoring students to engage ceramics as a medium of cultural expression and innovation. His dual role as educator and artist strengthens Makerere University’s reputation as a hub for artistic excellence in East Africa.
