Dr. Andrew Katumba is a Ugandan engineer and academic specializing in photonics and artificial intelligence. He is a lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Makerere University, where he leads the Marconi Research and Innovation Lab. Dr. Katumba earned his Ph.D. in Photonics Engineering from Ghent University in Belgium and holds a master’s degree in Optics and Photonics from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. His research focuses on applying AI to healthcare, particularly in cancer screening using medical imaging technologies such as ultrasound, multiparametric MRI, and CT scans. He collaborates with the Uganda Cancer Institute to develop solutions tailored for low-resource settings. Beyond healthcare, his expertise spans neuromorphic computing, photonic reservoir computing, and optical communication systems. With international experience in Belgium, Germany, and the UK, Dr. Katumba is recognized for bridging engineering and medicine to advance accessible, innovative technologies in Africa.
