Biography

Kato Abbey is a Lecturer in the Department of Fine Art at the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts (MTSIFA), College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), Makerere University. He is both an academic and a practicing artist whose work engages with contemporary Ugandan visual culture.

His teaching focuses on studio practice, visual communication, and art pedagogy, emphasizing experiential learning and creative exploration. Through his mentorship, he encourages students to develop strong individual artistic voices while situating their practice within broader cultural and social contexts.

As a researcher and artist, Abbey’s interests include contemporary Ugandan art, cultural identity, and the intersections of traditional and modern artistic practices. His work highlights the role of art in fostering dialogue, resilience, and innovation.

By combining teaching, research, and creative practice, Kato Abbey contributes to Makerere University’s mission of advancing artistic excellence and cultural visibility in East Africa.
