Henry Alinaitwe: Building firm innovation Enablers and Barriers affecting Productivity

Abstract

Efforts to promote innovation are at the heart of current research in building in an endeavour to make it more productive and competitive. At the same time, there is lack of statistical data on innovation. A review of the major barriers and enablers to innovation at business level has been carried out which made been a basis for making propositions about the factors that affect innovation. A questionnaire was then made and a survey carried out on building contractors in Uganda. The identified enablers and barriers to innovation were then ranked and correlated. Having an educated technically qualified workforce and having experienced diverse workforce are regarded the greatest enablers to innovation for building firms that will drive forward productivity. The effect of design on construction and the level of tax regimes are regarded the greatest barriers to innovation in construction firms.
