History of School of Engineering

The Faculty of Technology was established in 1969 and officially opened in July 1970 with an intake of 26 students in three traditional disciplines of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering during this time when the Government of Uganda released that industries needed more technical man power than what was being produced from the University of Nairobi.

The Makerere Engineering Society was incorporated in 1971 and it was also resolved in December 1995 that admissions were to be directed into the three disciplines of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Three years later the University introduced a semester system accompanied by diversification, redesign and introduction of a credit system in 1998 which was embraced by the Faculty of Engineering. The department of Architecture was also started during this same year followed by that of surveying in 1990. The faculty of Agriculture also started a department of Agricultural Engineering with an arrangement that their students were to spend their first two years in the Faculty of Technology studying the same subjects with their Mechanical Engineering counterparts till to date.

The progress of the faculty of Technology during the first sixteen years was made possible by the unswerving support of UNDP-UNESCO project that provided expatriate staff, scholarships, laboratory equipment and text books. More graduate programs like urban planning, Construction Management, Biomedical engineering, and Master’s programs were eventually incorporated too.

The Makerere University Council approved the Senate recommendation to transform Makerere University into a collegiate university on 12th November 2010 which led to the birth of the College of Engineering, Design Art, and Technology which is now fifty two years since inception in 1969.the faculty of technology was established in 1969 and officially opened in July 1970 with an intake of 26 students in three traditional disciplines of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering during this time when the government of Uganda released that industries needed more technical man power than what was being produced from the university of Nairobi.
