Makerere Engineering Society Celebrates Golden Jubilee at A Two Day Pompous Open Event

KAMPALA– On 19th and 20th November 2021, at Makerere University, the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) conducted the 10th Annual CEDAT Open Day under the theme:  Innovation and Technology in Combating Crisis.

The event which took place at CTF2 Auditorium at Makerere University witnessed by a number of personalities from all walks of life but mainly engineering and industrial sector.

Some of the guests included; Corporate companies, Government ministries, CEDAT alumni, students, teaching and non-teaching staff, sponsors and partners. 

The notable sponsors and partners included; Uganda Electricity Generation Company, StartHub, Pepsi, Housing Finance bank, UMEME, Uganda Gatsby Trust, National Water, Multikonsults Uganda Limited and Sewage Corporation, Uganda Engineers Registration Board and Technology Consults Limited.

In his welcome remarks, the College Principal Professor Henry Alinaitwe appreciated all the stakeholders and partners for honouring the event with their presence.

He explained the main reasons and the objectives of the event, which include; creating awareness about CEDAT, showcase the things that the college has done, what it has the potential to do and also to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Makerere Engineering Society.

The Makerere Engineering Society (MES) is the pioneer engineering students’ body within Makerere University at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT).

Having been founded in 1971 at a time when most engineering disciplines were introduced in Makerere University and Uganda as a whole. 

Since then, the Society has played a pivotal role in changing the lives and attitudes of several great men and women in the engineering field by equipping them with interpersonal, leadership and social skills, indispensable in the development of successful careers which has both promoted national and global development. 

The Guest of Honor Minister Peter Lokeris awards the best innovators, Gathoni Gloria and Joana Ishimwe a cheque cash prize.

MES boasts of a rich chain of products over the years in terms of well-placed engineers, professors and other professionals. 

The MES activities revolve around the main aims and objectives of the association. 

The first Makerere Engineering Society Magazine in 50 years was launched for the event commemoration and celebration.

They include the Annual Technology Conference and Dinner, the Open Day and Exhibition Day, Industrial Tours and the Technology Sports Gala.

 “I congratulate the Makerere Engineering Society upon their 50th Anniversary and this should be a time for the CEDAT students to reflect on the technology and the innovations in line with the theme of the event.” Said Hon. Dr. Monica Musenero Masanza in her opening remarks.

The CEDAT Students represented by Mr. Edmund Walusimbi the President of The Makerere Engineering Society (MES) appreciated the Government for the support to Student Projects at CEDAT especially the Kiira EV in promoting Science and technological innovations in the country.

One annual event to watch out for, the CEDAT Open Day features student’s innovation at the college giving a platform to the students to showcase their projects.

Among other projects by the students, the ANNIV-self cleaning water filter, by Angel Uwera and Ivan Otim, first year mechanical engineering students; is to be used for by all people who use other sources of water like rain due to limited access to national water services to curb poor water sanitation in Uganda in a more cost effective way in this global crisis.

The two day event saw students from MUFASA showcase their fashion and art bits in a fashion show run way at the college and also the first magazine of the Makerere Engineering Society being launched.

The magazine looks to present and publish the major events and activities at the School Of Engineering as the Makerere Engineering Society celebrates 50 years of existance.

Ranging from the history of the School Of Engineering to the leadership scope from the administration to the students, the magazine is an enduring work of reference and a running commentary on the students’ involvement in innovation, research and leadership at the School Of Engineering.

The event saw the Makerere Engineering Society website being launched.

The magazine hopes to be a journey through involvement in MES activities through different conferences, workshops and community programs. It features interviews from professional engineering associations like UIPE basically on the registrations and processes on advancing from the different registrations.

To render the very essence of the students’ innovation, the magazine featured some of the projects fostered by the students at the School Of Engineering, not limited to the Vepox Filter, Hyabio Plastics and Kawallet.

Dr. Peter T. Lokeris Minister of State for Mineral Development addressing the audience soon after he launched the MES magazine and Website said “I’m very happy to see ladies increasing here”. 

“Unlike in the past when there was a feeling that ladies could not undertake such programs.” The minister appreciated the College of Engineering for the profound investment in research, innovation and technological advancement.
