LEC 2201 Land Economics II

Rationale/Course Description

This course considers a further in-depth understanding of location of regional economies; theories of urban growth; regional growth and the distribution of economic activities over these regions; industrial location and theories; and regional economic problems. It also includes detailed understanding of land value taxation; housing market analysis, externalities in urban areas and possible government interventions in the property markets.

Objectives

  • Appreciate the theoretical basis for urban growth
  • Understand the theoretical basis for location of other urban land uses especially industrial land uses
  • Understand the role of land economists in urban planning, housing and urban development
  • Appreciate the significance of good land value taxation system and its necessity in the land administration and management
  • Appreciate the costs and externalities of an inefficient urban land development system
