Robert Sekajja Earns PhD with Groundbreaking Study on Energy Transition

Kampala, Uganda – January 30, 2026.

Makerere University’s College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) proudly announced the successful defense of a groundbreaking PhD thesis by Mr. Robert Kakebe Sekajja. His research, titled “Evaluation of Transition Pathways from Traditional Bioenergy to Clean Domestic Cooking Energy Services in Uganda Using a System Dynamics Approach”, marks a significant contribution to the ongoing discourse on sustainable energy solutions in Uganda.

The defense took place at the CEDAT Board Room in a hybrid format, accommodating both physical and online participants. The session was chaired by Associate Professor Dorothy Okello, Dean of the School of Engineering, who commended the candidate for his rigorous analysis and innovative approach to addressing one of Uganda’s most pressing energy challenges.

Supervisory Team

Mr. Sekajja’s work was guided by Dr. Nabuuma Betty and Associate Professor Lubwama Micheal, both from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Their mentorship ensured the research met the highest academic standards while remaining relevant to Uganda’s energy policy and development agenda.

Examination Panel

The defense panel comprised distinguished scholars:

  • Prof. Kirabira John Baptist, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Dr. Serugunda Jonathan, Department of Electrical Engineering.
  • Dr. Kimuli Ismail, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Dr. Mujun Francis, Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Research Significance

Uganda continues to rely heavily on traditional bioenergy sources such as firewood and charcoal, which pose environmental, health, and economic challenges. Mr. Sekajja’s thesis employs system dynamics modeling to evaluate pathways toward cleaner, more sustainable domestic cooking energy services. His findings provide actionable insights for policymakers, energy planners, and development partners seeking to accelerate Uganda’s transition to modern energy solutions.

Institutional Pride

College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) leadership emphasized that this achievement reflects Makerere University’s commitment to advancing research that addresses national and global challenges. The successful defense not only highlights the candidate’s academic excellence but also strengthens the university’s role in shaping sustainable energy futures for Uganda and beyond.
