Ms. Yvonne Tusiimire succesfuly defends her PhD Thesis at Makerere

Kampala, Uganda — April 2026

The College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), Makerere University proudly celebrated the successful PhD defense of Ms. Yvonne Tusiimire at the marking a significant milestone in biomedical engineering research.

Her doctoral thesis, “3D Electrospun PLLA Nano Fibrous Membranes Coated with Regenerated Silk Fibron and Silver Nitrate for Burn Wounds”, explored the development of advanced biomaterials designed to improve the treatment of burn injuries. By combining poly-L-lacticacid (PLLA) nanofibers with regenerated silk fibron and silver nitrate coatings, Ms. Tusiimire’s work demonstrated how engineered membranes can enhance wound healing, reduce infection risks, and provide cost-effective solutions for patients in low-resource settings.

The hybrid defence event, held on April 22nd was attended both physically and virtually, and it showcased her rigorous research methodology and commitment to advancing knowledge in biomedical engineering. University officials commended her achievement as a testament to Makerere’s dedication to producing world-class scholars and innovators.

Impact of the Study

Burn wounds remain a critical public health challenge, particularly in developing countries where access to advanced treatment options is limited. Ms. Tusiimire’s research offers a promising pathway toward affordable, effective, and locally adaptable biomedical solutions. Her work not only contributes to scientific innovation but also aligns with Uganda’s broader health and development agenda.

Defense Committee

Her defense was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dorothy Okello, Dean of the School of Engineering, with supervision from Assoc. Prof. M. Lubwama (Mechanical Engineering) and Dr. Robert Sekitoleko (Biomedical Engineering). The panel included distinguished academics from Makerere University, Busitema University, Kyambogo University, and Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
