The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Jordan Asiimwe, on Tuesday July 21st, 2026, made his maiden visit to Makerere University’s College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), where he engaged with researchers and innovators showcasing cutting-edge projects.
Welcomed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and College Principal Prof. Moses Musinguzi, the Minister expressed gratitude for the coordination of senior scholars to present their work. “This is my college because I come from engineering mathematics. We are going to work together to ensure that we move on with the guidance of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda,” Asiimwe said.
He explained that his mission, as directed by the President, is to ensure scientists’ projects move beyond laboratories into commercialization. “My mechanism is touch — don’t do things lushly. Whatever you do, ensure it is ready to be seen nationally and internationally,” he emphasized.
Driving a Knowledge Economy
Asiimwe praised Makerere University as a leading institution in Uganda and the region, noting its legacy in publishing. He pledged to ensure it also becomes a hub for commercialization. “Our future prosperity depends on strengthening our scientific base and ensuring innovation is locally developed and supported,” he said.
The Minister’s call comes at a time when Uganda is seeking to accelerate industrialization and technological advancement, with universities and research institutions expected to play a central role in driving innovation.
Innovations Showcased
During the visit, Asiimwe and his entourage toured several pioneering projects, including:
- Value addition of tungsten ores to tungsten carbides for sustainable mineral development.
- Smart Home Energy Project.
- Solar water pump development.
- Direct Reduction Technology for metallization of Ugandan iron ores.
- Smart Mobility Corridors for road safety using AI and IoT analytics.
- Electrifying informal urban transport through evidence-based support for e-motorcycle adoption.
- Application of iron oxide nanoparticles in wastewater and drinking water treatment.
Institutional Appreciation
Prof. Musinguzi extended appreciation to the STI Ministry for its support, affirming that Makerere remains committed to championing academic and research excellence while contributing to Uganda’s industrial transformation.
