Architecture students make structural designs for Mary Stuart Hall of Residence

Architecture students from the Department of Architecture and Physical Planning presented Mary Stuart Hall of residence technical drawings to the Vice Chancellor Makerere University Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe in the Council Room on 18th July 2024.

Prof. Nawangwe applauded the students for the exciting proposals to improve Mary Stuart Hall of Residence which is due for renovation. The staff especially Arch. Dr. Kenneth Semwogerere was commended for the supervisory role and encouraged the students to work with the contractor to have their proposals incorporated during the construction. He also asked students to utilize the space behind the hall to create an environment that will make students live in a comfortable environment during their stay at Makerere

The student team who were undertaking an internship comprised Babirye Bridget, Lwanga Jimmy, Kisekwa Joseph, Galooba Reagan, Mwesigwa Victor, and Ampeirwe Muzoora. Others included Agaba Joshua and Moyoa Nudle CEDAT Alumni who graduated in February 2024 at the 74th Makerere University Graduation.  The proposal is aimed at having a feminine hall with designated places for canteens, cafeteria, and reception.

The principal of CEDAT, Prof. Moses Musinguzi extended appreciation to the students for the good work done and asked them to come up with a design that would deter students from cooking in their bed spaces, prevent students from committing suicide, and reduce water usage by incorporating toilets that use less water.

Prof. Maria Kusule the Deputy Principal of CEDAT, said that the art pieces at Mary Stuart Hall needed to be preserved since they cost a lot of money. He proposed that be kept at the Institute of Heritage Conservation and Restoration at Margaret Trowel School of Industrial Fine Art. He further proposed that the student designs should also look at creating sports areas around the hall
