Dr. Amin Tamale Kiggundu, Chair, Department of Architecture and Physical Planning

Established in 1984, the Department of Architecture and Physical Planning has enjoyed a rich and diverse experience in training students from all walks of life both within Uganda and all over East Africa.

The educational experience is broadened and enriched by close interaction between the department, professional architects and planners in the field as well as partner universities like the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), The Oslo School of Architecture as well as the Eastern African architecture and planning schools.

As a four year training programme, the Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning has been offered since 1997. Started as a Bachelor of Urban Planning, the programme was transferred from the Department of Geography to the then Department of Architecture at the College of Engineering Design Art and Technology (CADAT) under a Senate and University Council resolution of 2010.

The first cohort of Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning under the expanded Department of Architecture and Physical Planning was admitted in 2011.

At the postgraduate level, the Department offers critical programmes such as a two years Masters of Architecture, a two years Masters of Urban Planning and Design, a one year Postgraduate Diploma in Urban Planning & Design as well as PhD training.

The Department seeks to stimulate future architects and physical planners/urban planners to think and learn more widely about the vast spectrum of sources from which they legitimately can and should draw inspiration, and about the impact that their work will have on the future of the society they are to serve.

Design education and training at the Department is based on the studio model of instruction, with students from both programmes organized in small groups working directly with staff tutors on guided research and design projects over the length of a full semester.

A career in Architecture and Physical Planning/urban planning is a correct choice for one’s academic and professional development in this modern world considering the fact that the construction industry and cities are among the fastest growing sectors.
