The management of the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) led by the Principal, Prof. Henry Alinaitwe handed over Seventeen Million Uganda Shillings being individual staff contributions towards the Mak@100 celebrations. This was received together with the Mak@100 team.
The team also used the same opportunity to congratulate the Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe upon his re appointment to the position of Vice Chancellor. They extended this gesture by a cake and a bouquet that were handed over to the Voce chancellor.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nawangwe said he was humbled by the surprise gifts from his colleagues at CEDAT. He commended the staff of CEDAT for their generous contribution towards the celebrations which he described as the biggest so far.
‘Im proud of my college, and the wonderful work it is doing diligently. Keep the culture of work, the professionalism and cooperation” said the Vice Chancellor while receiving the team in his office.
He observed that the rate at which staff at the College were retiring was very high given that they were on high demand. He said he would do all that was possible to support the college to replace the staff that leave adding that this was one of the colleges that were regarded as critical and therefore in need of emergency support in filing the gaps.
‘I hope I have not disappointed you as a College. The training I got at the College has made me what Iam as the first Vice chancellor under the new law’, he said adding that the fact that the University Council and management reappointed him was a result of the good teaching he received from the College.
Nawangwe said in collaboration with UNDP, Makerere University was establishing an Innovations hub at the Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility and urged the staff and students at CEDAT to optimumly utilize the availed services. He said effort is on to address concerns on Intellectual property and that specialist drawn from various disciplines were engaged in writing patents.
It was also revealed that the Africa Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) was organizing an exhibition from the 30th of September to 2nd October 2022 with one of the major activities being to show case innovations as well as conducting sessions about Intellectual Property targeted to professionals, staff, students and others from outside the university.
Prof. Henry Alinaitwe, while speaking on behalf of the staff of CEDAT congratulated the Vice Chancellor Prof. Nwangwe for carrying the CEDAT flag high but also the University and other bigger flags beyond the college. He extended appreciation to the VC for all that he was doing in rendering the College the much-needed support and guidance as well as selecting his deputy from there.
He said the college was doing well in terms of graduation output, financial management and that the college was stable since staff were working as a team. He said he was bringing a contribution from the staff as a way of exhibiting the support of the staff towards the noble cause and that they were looking forward to have a grand event for Mak@100.
The delegation from CEDAT was comprised of the Deputy Principal, Dr. Venny Nakazibwe, Dr. Amanda Tumusiime from MTSIFA, Dr. Robinah Kulabako, Department of CIVL and environmental Engineering.
Awel noted that the Mak@100 team was making efforts towards mobilizing and involving students and commended the CEDAT students who were actively involved in the events.
